A state Assembly committee is set to discuss a bill that could add 10 cents to the cost of canned and bottled drinks.
State Assemblywoman Barbara Greenstein is co-sponsoring the bill for environmental and financial reasons. Supporters say the added cost, which would be refunded after recycling, will prevent empties being left as litter.
The bill would apply to juice, soda, sports drinks, water, wine and beer. Money from unreturned cans and bottles would help the state economy, according to Greenstein.
"The state would get 75 percent of the money for bottles that are not brought back and the rest would go to retailers," she says.
The committee is set to meet and review the bill May 12.
