If Governor Spitzer (D-NY) has his way, schools in the Bronx and the rest of the state will see a large increase in funding.Spitzer is looking to increase funding statewide by several billion dollars over a four-year period. He says he'll offer successful schools a $15 million increase in funding. For failing schools, the governor plans to monitor them and issue report cards for principals and superintendents. As many as 5 percent of schools statewide could be shut down for not making the grade. The governor's budget plan also wants to increase the number of charter schools, pushing the cap from 100 to 250. Randi Weingarten, the teachers' union president, says Spitzer's plan will "lift all schools instead of robbing Peter to pay Paul."
