Democrat Eliot Spitzer has won the New York gubernatorial race, making him the state's first new governor in 12 years.

The former attorney general rose to international acclaim as the crime-busting attorney general who cleaned up Wall Street. While campaigning, Spitzer repeatedly painted Faso as a right-wing Republican out of touch with New Yorkers' values. In return, Faso lashed back, calling Spitzer an Albany-insider incapable of bringing change. The two sparred on every hot-topic issue including gay marriage, the economy and taxes. The only issue both candidates agreed on was their support of capital punishment.

Spitzer will succeed Governor George Pataki (R), who decided not to run for re-election after three terms in office.
