Several groups gathered goods and clothes at St. Christopher’s Church to help the more than 200 people impacted by a Baldwin apartment building fire.

The fire started on the third floor of an apartment building on the morning of June 26.

Thankfully, everyone inside got out OK, but many residents lost everything.

Church parishioners, volunteers, neighbors, Catholic Charities, the Baldwin Lions Club, the Baldwin school board, and others quickly stepped in to help those who lost everything.

Now, the entire basement of the church is filled with clothing for men, women and children.

Plus there are tons of toys, shoes and toiletries.

Michael McKeon, of Baldwin, was one of the residents who ran out of the building when it began to fill with smoke.

He says the collection drive is an example of what people with hearts do for others.

“This is amazing. The fact that they’re doing this for a group of people who really do desperately need something like this,” he said.

The church will have another collection drive for anyone impacted by the fire on Monday, July 7 from 3 to 8 p.m

The Oceanside Community Warriors are collecting goods at the Oceanside VFW this Sunday from 9 a.m to noon.

The goods collected will be donated to those impacted by the fire.
