As some South Amboy Catholic school students said goodbye to another school year, their parents learned Friday they had to also say goodbye to their school.
The announcement notice was sent home on the second to last day of school at St. Mary Elementary. Shocked parents said the Rev. Dennis Weezorak had reassured them the school would not shut down.
"Five weeks ago Father Dennis stood on the altar and said ?Let me put to rest these are rumors, not going to happen.? I feel betrayed by a man of the cloth," parent Paul Kopelakis said.
Weezorak wouldn't talk to News 12 New Jersey Sunday but in the letter sent out Friday, he blamed falling enrollment and poor funding. He wrote that he warned parents of the difficult scenario.
Parents and teachers plan to hold a rally outside the school Monday morning. Representatives from three other Catholic schools will be at St. Mary to help register kids for other schools.
