Some Soundview residents are furious nothing is being done to clean up a lot next to a high school they say is contaminated.
The Department of Education says the Soundview Education Campus is safe for its 600 students. However, Bronx Community Board 9 says the property next to the school is contaminated. A board representative says harmful chemicals are released into the air from dust when trucks drive through the lot.
The land was bought by JJ Lyons and Associates in 1999. Before the school was built, the land was used as a parking lot where a city-employed West Nile pesticide company parked its trucks. Bronx activists say nothing is being done by the city to make the new property owner clean up the land.
