Some Passaic fire victims return to collect belongings
Some of the residents who were evacuated after a six-alarm fire at a Passaic apartment building Saturday were allowed back inside on Monday.
Officials said the fire broke out at the five-story building on Gregory Street around 1 p.m.
Residents living on the first three floors were allowed inside the building around 8 a.m. Monday to grab important documents and belongings that survived the fire. People began lining up to gain access hours beforehand.
“I am hoping to find anything,” victim Dana Rizzi said. “I'm supposed to be getting married in October. I live on the fourth floor.”
About 160 residents live in the building. All were safely evacuated, and most residents are said to have found a place to stay with family or friends.
While no one was seriously injured, some tenants and firefighters were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries, officials said.
Mayor Hector Lora said donations are being accepted at City Hall for those who lost their belongings.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
