(09/19/06) HARRISON ? Die-hard soccer fans in New Jersey had plenty to cheer about Tuesday when the New York Red Bulls announced plans for a new $200 million stadium.
The 25,000-seat Red Bull Park will be located in Harrison, much to the delight of nearby fans. Red Bull Park President Nick Sakiewicz says Harrison was chosen for transportation, infrastructure and the number of loyal soccer fans in the area. Officials are also quick to point out there is more to the project than just soccer. The stadium will be the centerpiece of a major redevelopment project with offices, retail and residential space.
Red Bulls fans say the stadium will give their team more of an identity. The club currently plays at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford. Those overseeing the project say the stadium should be completed in less than two years.
