A severe thunderstorm watch has just been issued until 9 p.m. for the northern zones of New Jersey. Intense rainfall, dangerous lightning, large hail and damaging winds in excess of 70 mph are the primary threats from now until 9 p.m. A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for intense storms to develop.

The intense, near-record-breaking heat will help fuel these storms this afternoon into the evening hours. Localized flooding could occur in low-lying areas and typical poor drainage areas.

This typical summer weather pattern we are in will eventually loosen its hold over the region just long enough so we can squeak out a beautiful day for Saturday. We'll have the sun. We'll have the heat, still. But the humidity eases just enough that it will feel comfortable being outside. If all our Saturdays can be like this upcoming one for the remainder of the summer, then it will be remembered as one of the best summers weather-wise in recent memory.

The summery weather returns on Sunday. Humidity builds slowly through the day. The temperatures will be near or just above 90 degrees again. It will feel hotter, and the likelihood of nasty thunderstorms returns by day's end.
