Embattled U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez has collected the necessary signatures to run for reelection this fall as an Independent.
If successful, Menendez would likely face off against New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim – who is considered to be the front-runner in the race to replace him – and a Republican.
Menendez is currently undergoing a federal corruption trial. Prosecutors say the Democratic senator accepted bribes and acted as a foreign agent of Egypt.
A 2022 FBI raid found gold bars in Menendez’s home and $480,000 stuffed in jackets and boxes.
Menendez stated he would not seek reelection as a Democrat during the trial. He has denied any wrongdoing.
