A second Rutgers fraternity in the past seven months has been suspended while the university investigates hazing claims.

Kappa Sigma’s Rutgers chapter has been ordered to cease and desist all operations, as of May 19.

A university spokesperson tells News 12 there were no reported injuries, and police have not responded to the Kappa Sigma property on Union Street. The property also displays letters for the Sigma Delta Tau sorority; the fraternity leases them the space.

While the investigation continues, the Kappa Sigma fraternity cannot host any events or do any recruitment. The fraternity's national organization tells News 12 they are aware of the reported hazing, and Rutgers' Gamma-Upsilon chapter is suspended.

The alumni website indicates this chapter has lost its charter twice since 2003 and got it back in 2023.

Previously, Rutgers suspended the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity in October 2025 over reported hazing that sent a 19-year-old to the hospital, critically injured. The national fraternity then sued dozens of its Rutgers members - those involved, as well as bystanders.

That teen, it was reported, came into contact with a live wire. As of January, he was said to be recovering.
