Seaside Heights borough officials unanimously approved a number of boardwalk ordinances following a chaotic Memorial Day weekend holiday.
The holiday weekend saw 80 people arrested and four people stabbed. This caused the borough council to introduce new rules for the boardwalk, including a proposal to close it early and to prohibit backpacks during certain hours.
The council on Wednesday voted in favor of the new rules.
Under the new ordinance, the boardwalk will be closed to the public between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. on Sunday night through Thursday night and from 1 a.m. until 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and on federal holidays.
Regarding bags on the boardwalk, officials say that no bags larger than 8 inches by 6 inches by 8 inches will be allowed on the boardwalk between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. from April 1 through Sept. 30 each year. Exceptions will be made for some items, such as medical devices or bags containing essential supplies for infants or toddlers. A full list can be found HERE.
Adults violating these new rules are subject to fines. Minors will be issued a warning and their parents will be contacted, according to officials.
The ordinances will have a second reading and public hearing on June 18 at 5 p.m.
