(07/18/06) EAST BRUNSWICK ? The recent outbreak of violence in the Middle East has many New Jersey residents asking questions about the militant group Hezbollah and its members.
The group, considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and Israel, was formed in 1982 after Israel invaded Lebanon to force out the Palestinians. Hezbollah is based in southern Lebanon and holds seats in the Lebanese Parliament. However, Rutgers University professor Dr. Hooshang Amirahmadi says the group?s militant faction does not listen to the government and is responsible for the recent kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers.
In order to curb Hezbollah?s operations, Dr. Amirahmad says pro-active U.S. diplomacy is vital. The professor says the U.S. and other countries, such as Iran, could work together to make sure Hezbollah does not continue its violent actions. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is expected to travel to the Middle East soon, possibly signaling a more active U.S. role in recent developments.
