Rough waters to affect holiday weekend conditions at Jersey beaches
Though conditions have improved after a mid-week coastal storm, Ocean County beachgoers could expect rough surf through Labor Day.
Many beaches in the area experienced erosion after a previous storm, leaving some cliffs in the sand.
One area that saw such a problem was Ortley Beach after high waves and erosion almost allowed water to reach its dunes. Luckily, a sand replenishment project in May helped add protection to the area.
But concerns remain in areas like Point Pleasant, where video shows waves crashing directly into the sand.
Waves ranging from three to five feet have been spotted throughout the coast.
Jenkinson’s Beach patrol lifeguard Brian Grainer says his beach is at yellow flag conditions, meaning cautionary swimming, but adds that water conditions won’t be safe for every type of swimmer over the holiday weekend.
