The Paterson Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its youngest officers after an early-morning shooting.Paterson Officer Tyron Franklin was off-duty and stopped at Broadway Chicken for dinner when the shooting occurred. Police say the preliminary investigation indicates Franklin was shot several times after a struggle with a suspect who was trying to rob him. The 23-year-old was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital within an hour of the incident.Franklin joined the department last April. His father served as Paterson's fire captain. Franklin leaves behind a 16-month-old son. Paterson Mayor Jose Torres is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the suspect's arrest and conviction.
