Reverend Al Sharpton joined the family of Eric Garner Sunday for a special unity church service in Elizabeth.
Garner died on July 17 in New York City three years ago after police put him in a chokehold.
Relatives of Garner and national leaders gather every year on the anniversary of his death to pay tribute.
Sunday morning's ceremony took place at New Hope Baptist Church.
Mourners went to Garner's gravesite in Linden after the service to pay tribute.
