The financial crisis ailing the nation hit New Jersey retailers hard this October.
Numbers released Thursday show that consumers largely avoided stores last month, which was the worst October for retail sales since 1969.
In response to shoppers cutting back, stores at the Jersey Garden Mall in Elizabeth are offering discounts of up to 75 percent this holiday season.
Despite October's grim numbers, Wal-Mart bucked the trend and actually reported gains.
