Family and friends gathered in Jersey City on Christmas night a year to the day when two police officers drove into a watery grave.
Robert Nguyen and Shawn Carson?s loved ones say time has done little to heal the pain of their loss. Relatives lit candles, cried and held each other close as they remembered the brave men. Carson was a 16-year veteran of the force and Nguyen had been a policeman for six years.
The officers were assisting Kearny police with putting up flares at malfunctioning bridge barricades. The barricades were not coming down to alert drivers that the Lincoln Highway Bridge was up. Family members say the officers plunged off the bridge because heavy fog and rain blurred their vision. Their bodies were recovered several days later.
