(05/15/06) TRENTON ? The relatives of two young murder victims spoke to an Assembly committee Monday in a push to toughen sentencing for child killers in New Jersey.
Those calling for revamped sentencing want life in prison without the possibility of parole for anyone who kills a child 16 years old or younger. Although similar laws are already in effect, those ordinances only apply in cases where the child is under the age of 14. The current law can also only be enacted if a sexual assault is combined with the murder.
Relatives say they can?t stomach the thought of child killers ever getting out of prison. The proposal, known as ?Judy and Nikki?s Law,? unanimously passed the committee. It now heads to the Assembly for a vote.
