Ramsey has officially enacted a new ordinance banning electric bikes and scooters from key public areas, including Main Street, sidewalks and town parks.

The move comes in response to a surge in e-bike popularity and a rise in accidents involving riders who fail to follow traffic laws.

Helmets are now legally required for all riders under age 17, and parents face fines of up to $1,000 if their child violates the rules.

E-bike riders must obey all traffic signs, and students must walk their e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks leading to and from all Ramsey schools.

Ramsey is one of several townships across New Jersey taking action to regulate e-bikes as their popularity grows.
