A rally was held Sunday afternoon in Palisades Park to express frustration with social media posts made by Mayor James Rotundo's mother.
The rally was organized by activist Jimmy Chae.
The longtime mayor is currently locked in a tight race against Chris Chung for the Democratic nomination following the primary last Tuesday. Chung is also Korean-American.
Rotundo's 80-year-old mother recently took it to social media to complain about the Korean-Americans living in Palisades Park. Korean-Americans make up more than 50 percent of Palisades Park's population.
During the rally, the entrance to City Hall in Palisades Park was crowded with about 200 Korean-Americans who spoke out against the posts.
Rotundo has released a statement of his own, saying his mother has since apologized and retracted her statement.
The Democratic primary race between Rotundo and Chung is too close to call, with more than 100 provisional ballots yet to be counted. The Bergen County Board of Elections are scheduled to recount those ballots on Monday.
