Nearly half of the 4,500 teachers of the Newark Public Schools did not show up for work on Monday, upsetting many parents.
The school superintendent believes that the teachers union encouraged the teachers to stay home. A contract dispute over whether January 2 is considered to be a federal holiday may have led to the call-outs.
The confusion and early dismissal did not sit well with some parents. Many expressed concern that their children would not have adequate supervision.
The superintendent says she is disappointed with the teachers that did not show up for work. She believes they may have to make up the day in June.
