The Public Service Enterprise Group (PSE&G) says Mylar balloons are the cause for a rise in power outages in the Garden State.

In the last five years, there has been an uptick of 26% in power outages.

Two large outages occurred this year in Newark and Carteret. About 9,400 people lost power in those incidents.

Officials say the metallic coating on the balloons conducts electricity, which causes a short circuit.
