The owners of the Irvington Motor Lodge have been charged in connection with a fire that killed three guests in 2005.
Randhir Maisuira and Prakash Patel were arrested at their homes in Roselle Park. Essex County prosecutors accuse the pair of risking widespread injury by ignoring safety regulations. The two were charged with aggravated manslaughter and face up to 30 years in prison.
Firefighters battling the fire were able to rescue some guests who were trapped behind chained and locked exits. Prosecutors say the owners were told in prior visits to keep the doors unchained and unlocked. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
