A Verona High School teacher is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a student.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says Matthew Swajkowski, 36, also oversaw the school’s chess club. They say that the student Swajkowski is accused of assaulting was a member of that club.

Officials say that the Verona Police Department was notified in July that Swajkowski allegedly was engaged in sexually inappropriate conduct with the student, who is a minor. They also say that Swajkowski provided the victim with alcoholic beverages.

Swajkowski faces several charges, including sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
