A community is in shock after a husband and wife were shot in the Bayville section of Berkeley Township, allegedly by their neighbor.
Detectives were seen roaming the scene Tuesday amid a blown-out front door and stunned neighbors.
“I couldn’t believe it at first. I couldn’t believe it,” said Howard Hoffman, who lives nearby.
“It’s insane. You know everyone has their own problems, but this is crazy,” said another neighbor, who did not want to be identified.
According to Ocean County Prosecutors, 53-year-old John Adamo opened fire at his next-door neighbors from his property just before 5 p.m. Monday - first shooting his neighbor while on a ladder working on his own home – and then shooting into the home, hitting the man’s wife.
“I was at home in my yard doing yard work. All I saw was a helicopter hovering overhead,” said Hoffman.
Police say a helicopter took the critically injured husband and wife to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, while other neighbors coming home couldn't believe the scene on Drake Drive.
“I know there’s been a history between these two houses but nothing worth getting shot over. It’s crazy,” said a neighbor.
Neighbors say the shooting could have been the culmination of a long-running dispute between the two property owners. A sign on the victims’ driveway that said “private property no trespassing” addressed the Adamo family by name.
“Cops were here more frequently than not. It's a very quiet neighborhood, dead-end street,” said the neighbor.
Once police arrived, investigators say a standoff lasting more than two hours ensued – before police blew up the front door and found Adamo dead inside an upstairs bathroom, where he appeared to have shot himself.
Neighbors say the youngest son of the victims helped save their lives.
“I’m really proud of their kid for being able to run and get to his phone and call the police,” said the neighbor.
Police have not yet released the names of the victims, but neighbors and family members say they’re prominent members of the family, taking part in charitable events and giving back to the community.
So far, no official reason for the shooting has been released as the investigation continues.
