A crash involving seven vehicles left one person dead Tuesday morning near the Freehold Raceway Mall, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
It happened around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Route 9 and Business Route 33. Witnesses say a driver heading north on Route 9 never slowed down to the stopped traffic at the light, barreling into the other cars, trucks and vans. That driver may have suffered a medical emergency before the impact. One truck flipped.
Jaclyn McLaughlin's husband was stopped at the light in his van when the crash happened. He was not hurt.
"He said he heard someone like barreling on the road. He was stopped at the light, red light on Route 9 going north and he looked in his rearview mirror when he heard the commotion,” McLaughlin says. He said, ‘I tried to go in reverse and swerve around it but I couldn't make it.’”
Route 9 North was closed for five hours while the investigation and cleanup continued. There is no word on any other injuries. Monmouth County prosecutors are leading the investigation.
