One of the most prestigious races in all thoroughbred competition will take place Saturday at Monmouth Park in Oceanport.
Haskell Stakes is a tradition dating back to 1968 at the Jersey Shore. The 12th of 14 races scheduled for Saturday boasts a purse of $1 million. Huge crowds are expected and will likely top the 50,000 mark. For Kentucky Derby fans, MAGE will be part of the eight-race field.
There will be 14 races in total Saturday, including one featuring a horse named Tiz a Prince. His owner and trainer Anthony Margotta calls Haskell Stakes a “jewel event” in the summertime.
“We all love Monmouth Park. I'm born and raised in Jersey. My clients are all from New Jersey. So, this is a big day for us all to participate in a race,” Margotta said.
Bill Anderson, Monmouth Park general manager, advises everyone to arrive early, especially those who will be in the picnic area.
Post time is Saturday at noon.
