(02/22/06) NEWARK ? Many people who work at Port Newark say they are firmly against the sale of port operations to a state-controlled company in the United Arab Emirates.
Workers believe the pending sale, which includes part of Port Newark, will increase the risk of the port becoming a terror target. A representative of the longshoreman?s union says many of the workers live near the port, and they have a genuine interest in keeping the area as safe as possible. However, a few people believe the sale would be a good thing based on the amount of revenue and overtime dollars a new company could bring in.
The portion of Port Newark up for grabs in the deal handles about four and a half million containers per year.
