The future is coming to Newark Liberty International Airport sooner than some may think.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey gave the first public test of its new self-driving shuttle.
The retrofitted van has sensors, robotic steering and cameras to help it detect obstacles. The plan is to use it for shorter rides around the airport, such as between the new Terminal A and the nearest parking facility.
The van’s creator, Port Authority program director of innovation Seth Wainer, says that this is just the first step toward full automation. \
The van still has one big milestone to cross – picking up actual passengers. It is not yet clear when this will happen.
