A group of suspects posing as FBI agents ransacked a woman’s Newark apartment, held her down and stole $7,500 before fleeing, police said.

Police are asking for the public’s help locating the suspects, who remain at large. According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr., the incident happened Aug. 27 at about 2:30 p.m. on Mott Street in Newark’s Ironbound section.

Miranda said three suspects knocked on the victim’s third-floor apartment door. They claimed to be federal agents and demanded that she open the door. A fourth suspect waited in a black Toyota Camry Solara with out-of-state license plates.

Police said that when the victim opened the door, the suspects rushed inside. One suspect pushed her onto a couch while two accomplices, both wearing masks, ransacked the apartment. They allegedly stole $7,500 from a safe in the bedroom and two credit cards from the woman’s purse.

The suspects then left the apartment, got into the Camry and fled east on Fleming Avenue. Police said a shuttle bus spotted in the area may also be connected to the home invasion.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newark Police Division’s Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS. All tips are confidential and may be eligible for a reward.
