A suspect wanted for attempted murder in Hillside was arrested in Newark after barricading himself in a home.
It was a chaotic scene on Monday afternoon as multiple law enforcement agencies descended on Irvine Turner Blvd in Newark while searching for the suspect.
According to Newark police, U.S. Marshals were attempting to apprehend the man for attempted murder in Hillside. The suspect barricaded himself in a three-family home on the 400 block of Irvine Turner Blvd in Newark.
Newark police say that the man is now in custody and there is no longer a threat to the public.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka says the suspect was barricaded in a home in Newark with a child in his hands.
"We have the child. The child is not in danger. I don’t know what he was trying to do or what it was about. I do know he had a child with him. The police safely removed the child from his care," Baraka said.
The relationship between the man and the child was not immediately made clear.
Gunfire was exchanged during the encounter, officials said. According to the mayor, no officers were injured. As for the suspect, the mayor says he was taken to the hospital. His condition has not been confirmed by officials.
Cynthia McCall lives in the neighborhood and witnessed some of the commotion.
"All I heard is a guy was barricaded in the house with a little girl... the little girl came out fine...I think [the suspect] came out on a stretcher," McCall said. "That was a shocker. Stuff like that hasn’t happened in a very long time because it got much better.”
While all this was going on, residents were unable to go back to their homes for several hours once the police tape went up.
"I came out my door all the news reporters were out there, so when I went out, I couldn't get back in because they had it blocked off," McCall said.
The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General is leading the investigation. News 12 reached out to the office and is waiting to hear back.
