A Philly man is being held at Monmouth County Correctional Facility after police say he used a sledgehammer to attack a 64-year-old Friday at an auto shop in Middletown.

Authorities say 36-year-old Michael Gonzalez hit the male victim multiple times in the head with the sledgehammer. He also pushed and injured a woman during the incident.

Witnesses at the scene detained the suspect until officers arrived, according to police.

Gonzalez was arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

The attack was not random, according to authorities. The suspect was connected to the victims, although it is currently unclear how.
