The Toms River police and Ocean County Prosecutor's Office are asking the public's help identifying the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash Tuesday night.
Officers were called to reports of a pedestrian struck by a car near Route 70 westbound at the Route 9 Bridge in around 11:10 p.m. Authorities say 34-year-old John Ekarius of Toms River was found unconscious. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police say that Ekarius was initially struck by either a blue late model Nissan Altima or an Infinity sedan. The driver of the Infinity left the scene. Ekarius was then struck by another vehicle. The driver of that car stopped and called police.
Officials say that the suspect's vehicle is believed to have sustained heavy front-end damage on the driver's side.
Anyone who may have any information about the crash is asked to call the Toms River Police Department at 732-349-0150 or the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at 732-929-2027.
