In an effort to increase pedestrian safety, Long Beach Township Police officers are stepping into local crosswalks to identify drivers who fail to stop for people crossing streets.

The Traffic Safety Unit's “Cops in Crosswalks” initiative took place Tuesday.

“During these details, officers pose as pedestrians crossing in designated crosswalks. Vehicles failing to stop for pedestrians are identified and stopped by a marked patrol vehicle,” police said in a statement.

During Tuesday's enforcement, police made 38 traffic stops in four hours. Police enlisted the help of community members to identify multiple pedestrian crossings in the township that posed safety concerns, including areas near Ocean and Long Beach boulevards.
