A man from Delaware found outside a Westfield elementary school with a loaded gun and additional ammunition had an alleged romantic relationship with a teacher at the school, police have learned.
The incident happened last Thursday around 4 p.m. at Tamaques Elementary School.
According to Union County prosecutors, police went to the school after authorities in Delaware told them a man, later identified as Thomas Wilkie, 46, was headed there and might be armed.
Classes had already concluded for the day, but the school went on lockdown because after-school activities were still taking place.
Authorities say Wilkie had a 45-caliber handgun loaded with hollow-point bullets and two more loaded clips of ammunition on him when he was arrested.
They say another 130 additional rounds were found in the trunk of his SUV.
Wilkie has been charged with third-degree possession of a firearm near an educational institution.
He will appear in court Wednesday.
If convicted, Wilkie faces up to 10 years in prison.
No shots were fired.
