Rutgers police are searching for a man who tried to carjack a woman near the Newark campus Friday afternoon.

Authorities say it happened around 2 p.m. on Bergen Street near 12th Avenue. They say a man wearing a face covering opened the woman’s car door and tried to pull her from the vehicle. The man had a weapon in his waistband.

Police say the woman was able to fight the man off and got away without getting hurt.

A description of the man was not made available.
