King was as third-grade teacher at Dr. Michael Conti School No. 5 in Jersey City. She specialized in education for children who have autism, according to Jersey City School Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez.
"She was an outstanding young educator, and our thoughts are with her family and friends. She will be sorely missed," Fernandez wrote in a statement to News 12.
Authorities say that the shooting happened inside the Toy Factory Apartments near Bergen and Virginia avenues.
News 12 is told that King's 15-year-old daughter was the person who called 911 to report the shooting.
The prosecutor says that Cooper was arrested in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, several hours after the shooting.
He was charged with murder, illegal possession of a weapon and child endangerment.
This incident marks the first homicide in Jersey City this year.
