Police: Live Civil War-era land mine found by employees sifting topsoil

Police in Howell were notified Tuesday of a possible land mine located by employees of Material Transport Group who were sifting topsoil at Randolph Road.

Police in Howell were notified Tuesday of a possible land mine located by employees of Material Transport Group who were sifting topsoil at Randolph Road.
Police determined the device resembled a Civil War land mine. The New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit arrived and determined the device was possibly still live and would have to be destroyed at its present location.

The device was destroyed safely without incident.
No injuries were reported.
