Hamilton Township police have identified the teen who was swept away while swimming with friends Wednesday afternoon.
Crews found the body of Marty Barchue, 17, around 8:30 a.m. Thursday not far from where he went missing while swimming at Roebling Memorial Park.
First responders were called to the park after reports that four teenage boys were struggling in the water. The other three boys were able to get to shore.
Jarod Tatarek, 15, told News 12 New Jersey that he tried to grab a hold of Barchue in the water but that the current was too strong.
“The current was so heavy [that] it took him. And then I reached out to try to grab him . . . [but] the current was so strong it took him away from my hand, and he went down. He was going under, coming up, gasping for air, going under and when he went around the corner, I lost sight of him,” Tatarek said.
Although school is over for the summer, officials said that grief counselors were in place at the school Thursday for any students who needed someone to speak with following the tragedy.
Hamilton officials say that the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on Barchue.
