A Hamilton Township police officer was shot by a suspect Friday night while responding to a disturbance call on the 1800 block of Orchard Avenue.

Hamilton police say the suspect opened fire at officers who arrived at the scene. The bullets struck one officer.

Police say the injured officer was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

The New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association commented on the incident, saying that a second officer is also being treated for trauma.

The incident remains under investigation, according to authorities.
