A truck slammed into a Raritan Township building Wednesday morning after its 69-year-old driver apparently suffered a fatal heart attack.
An official for Raritan Township says it appears Fred Reinknecht, Jr., of Lebanon Township, was on Route 31 when he had the heart attack. The truck then apparently jumped over the highway and crashed into the AAA building in the Lowe's shopping center at around 4:30 a.m. The crash also ruptured a gas line.
Reinknecht was pronounced dead at the scene.
"There could have been more fatalities or injuries had the truck crossed the busy highway and come through this parking lot when there were a lot of busy customers in here," Raritan Township Administrator Allan Pietrefesa says.
The other businesses inside this busy shopping center were reopened several hours later. The AAA building apparently won't be able to reopen until the gas lines and a wall are repaired.
