A Bergen County mansion has been condemned after officials said more than 100 abused animals were found there Tuesday.
The Bergen County SPCA told News 12 New Jersey that it took between eight and nine hours to remove 90 animals at 25 Burning Hollow Rd. in Saddle River. SPCA representatives said some animals were abused and neglected, while others were dead.
The Bergen County SPCA said there are up to 40 more animals that still need to be removed.
Authorities were told about the house by a delivery man who said he noticed a strange odor. Saddle River police said he called the department after he looked inside a window and saw the conditions inside the home.
The owners of the mansion, 66-year-old Philip Tamis and 49-year-old Cynthia Stewart Tamis, have hired a lawyer, though they haven?t been charged. The attorney for the couple says his clients are animal lovers who got in over their heads after experiencing some financial trouble.
The Bergen County SPCA is currently caring for all of the animals that are still alive. Officials are considering cruelty charges against the owners. The maximum punishment in New Jersey for animal cruelty is a $1,000 fine and six months in jail per charge.
