A fight at the Keansburg Amusement Park left two women injured after a disagreement with teenagers Monday night as the park was closing.
Keansburg police officers and detectives were back at the park Tuesday as it opened for the day.
A witness tells News 12 New Jersey that two women and a group of teenagers got into an argument and started fighting.
“They all knew each other. Unfortunately, people did get injured,” says Joe Mendez, director of operations for Runaway Rapids Waterpark, which is part of the Keansburg Amusement Park.
Mendez says he helped to break up the fight. He says the two women were hurt. One suffered a head wound, while the other was badly beaten about the face.
Mendez says he takes these incidents personally, as they harm the reputation of Keansburg.
“It’s so hard. You get a couple steps forward and you get knocked back a couple steps. A lot of misinformation,” Mendez says.
He says that there were rumors of a stabbing, which he says are completely false.
Nickerson’s owner Emily Mayes says she also worries about the reputation of the town, and potentially the amusement park. She knows Keansburg has a reputation of being a gritty town.
"I hate the reputation of Keansburg, honestly, growing up here like I'm really proud to be from Keansburg and I love it here,” she says. "I know a lot of my employees that aren't from Keansburg are scared to come work here and walk to the employee lot behind the waterpark."
She says she is continuously trying to change that reputation and is supportive of improvements and family programs Keansburg is trying to promote. She says she knows it as a fun place for families and hopes others will think the same.
Keansburg police say both women have been sent home from the hospital. There was no mention of arrests.
