In 1993 a group of Hudson County natives whose weekly baseball game was struggling to attract enough players decided to return to the game of their youth - stickball.
The group has been playing ever since, even attracting some new members along the way. They play every Sunday from spring until fall.
The players range in age from 27 to 78. Some have known each other since they were just children.
“Kenny Brown over there I've known him since I was about 5,” says player Dennis Murphy. “His brother Jerry he was one of the older guys with the cigarettes rolled up in his sleeve. But now we're best of friends.”
The group often spends more time razzing on one another than actually playing, and they say that they love every minute of it.
“I would pay to do this every week. To play with my brother and guys I grew up with and their sons. It's been, just a wonderful awesome feeling,” says 78-year-old Jerry Brown. “For most guys our age, when you talk to them about it, for them it's a memory they can recall when they were kids. But we're here every week doing this street game that we grew up with that we love so much. You can't put it into words.”
The group plays their games at a North Bergen loading dock.
