Plainfield students walk out of class to protest ICE activity

Students in Plainfield walked out of their classes Tuesday morning to protest recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in New Jersey.
Chanting “ICE off the streets,” students gathered to voice their concerns over recent immigration raids at Black Lives Matter Plaza. The students said the enforcement actions have created fear in their communities.
“We are tired of innocent people being taken by ICE,” said Jayden Serrano, a student at Plainfield High School. “We are tired of innocent children being scared to go to school.”
City officials expressed support for the students. Mayor Adrian Mapp praised the turnout and said Plainfield will continue to oppose ICE enforcement efforts.
“We will stand up, we will oppose ICE and the Trump administration,” Mapp said.
Several students said they participated out of concern for their families, while others said they were speaking out for classmates who have been detained.
“I don’t want to be afraid that my mom won’t come home because ICE is around the corner,” one student said.
The mayor also reiterated that Plainfield police will not cooperate with ICE, citing the state’s Immigrant Trust Directive.
The demonstration remained peaceful.
