Women over 40 years old should get a mammogram, an X-ray of the breast tissue, every one to two years, according to American Cancer Society.
The Affordable Care Act requires many health plans to cover mammograms for women over age 40, but if you don’t have private insurance, you can still get mammograms.

The CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program provides screenings and diagnostic services to low-income, uninsured and underinsured women. Find a location here.
National Breast Cancer Foundation partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms. Click here to search for a location near you.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation has affiliates in 120 cities. Search for a local affiliate here.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in October, many imaging centers offer reduced rates. Call your preferred center and see what options they have. You can search for a local mammography center on the FDA website.
