A small plane crashed in a residential area of Wayne and burst into flames Monday, killing the pilot.
State police say the crash occurred just before 8 p.m. on Nellis Drive. Firefighters responded and were able to quickly douse the flames. The Wayne deputy police chief says the plane struck nearby trees, flipped over and hit the middle of the street. The deputy police chief says the plane ended up in the driveway of a home, but did not hit the house. According to police, at least one person was killed, although it was not immediately clear how many people were aboard the plane.
No one on the ground was injured in the crash. Officials say the single-engine plane was traveling from North Carolina to the Essex County Airport in Fairfield. Investigators are searching the wreckage for the cause of the crash.
