The Perth Amboy police union is fighting proposed layoffs of many officers at the hands of the city.Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas (D-NJ) says the city is in serious financial trouble. He says that is why the city asked the Policemen's Benevolent Association (PBA) to defer five months of salary increases. Vas says the city made an agreement with the firefighter's union in December to defer the firefighters? raises until 2008. However, he says the police union isn?t being as cooperative. Vas says Perth Amboy is a small town and can afford to cut down on its police force. Many people say cutting the jobs of police officers is dangerous and feel the city can save money other ways rather than lay off the workers who protect the public. Some of the officers already have law enforcement jobs lined up with other departments.
