Hundreds of old tax documents with personal information on them were found left out in the trash Tuesday in Edison.
An anonymous resident of the Garfield Place condos in Edison sent News 12 New Jersey pictures of the documents after calling police. The boxes, about 12 in all, were from Tax DRX, a Cranford-based company.
Hudson Etienne, owner of Tax DRX, says the records were lost because he fell behind on his storage payments.
"Our requirement is to keep client records for three years on site," he explains. "After three years, we are to purge them."
When Etienne moved offices a few years ago, he stored some of his belongings at CubeSmart Storage in Elizabeth. When he fell behind on the storage payments, his unit was sold along with all of his belongings inside.
"I attempted to secure the client files...[CubeSmart] refused to allow me access," Etienne says.
News 12 New Jersey reached out to CubeSmart, but calls for comment were not returned.
Edison police believe whoever bought the contents of the unit dumped the files. They were returned to Etienne, who says that he plans to shred them all.
Edison police do not believe any personal information was stolen, but they do encourage all taxpayers to keep a close watch on their tax files and credit reports.
Etienne says he will take full responsibility if any information was leaked.
